Land-based Waste Treatment Market
The global waste market is vast, with Europe alone generating approximately 1.8 billion tonnes of waste per year. Waste management methods have been moving away from disposal in favor of recycling and recovery. This natural tendency has gathered further momentum by legislative drivers such as the EU Landfill Directive 2001 which is aimed at reducing the quantity of waste going to landfill. Member states must reduce the amount of municipal solid waste going to landfill to 75 per cent of 1995 levels by 2010. Landfill taxes have been increased in the EU to act as a deterrent to landfill. Other fiscal measures, such as carbon credit allowances, provide additional revenue streams to sophisticated waste treatment technologies such as PyroGenesis’.
Approximately five million tonnes of hazardous waste are produced per year in the UK alone and this is estimated to be growing at a rate of 8% per year. The existing hazardous waste treatment market in the UK is estimated at over £0.5 billion per year.
Recycling and composting are the preferred methods of waste treatment, but for some waste streams these are not appropriate and there is a need for more technologically sophisticated waste management methods that address the need for resource recovery while at the same time avoiding the production of toxic by-products.
PyroGenesis’ Plasma Resource Recovery System (PRRS) is a very scalable solution with sizes ranging between 0.5 to 100 TPD being ideally suited for treating clinical, hazardous, industrial, and municipal solid waste treatment.
